Kambly is a state award winning, 30
bed, nonprofit adult foster care facility serving people with
developmental disabilities. Started in 1949 by Viola Kambly as a
boarding school for mentally impaired children,
Kambly has
evolved into an adult foster care home that is considered a
"preferred provider" by community mental health and social
service professionals.
Kambly provides both residential and adult day care services.
The twenty-four hour residential service includes clean and
efficient rooms, nutritional meals and snacks, recreational and
group activities while under the personal care of a dedicated
and trained staff.
Respite services are offered to adult day care clients with
developmental disabilities by providing day care, meals,
medication if needed and daily activities. Respite clients may
be brought to
Kambly to provide families respite while working,
running errands, recovering from a medical condition or for
various other reasons.
The mission of
Kambly Living Center is to provide the
opportunity for adults who are disabled to achieve emotional and
social growth in a secure, homelike atmosphere. When you walk
in, it looks like most homes only with more family members.
There is a great room with a number of couches and large
television. The residents gather here in the evenings to talk
and watch their favorite programs. Some of them work on crafts,
read or play games. Residents have certain responsibilities they
perform: some go to school, some have part time jobs and some
enjoy helping with the routine tasks around the house. Julie for
instance is our "#1 Kichen Helper" her joy in helping with the
dishes adds to our family feel.
It is the philosophy of the Kambly Living Center
to approach our
work with the developmentally disabled population holistically
by:
- Encouraging individuals with the
development of self-determination skills and promoting
active choice-making within an individual’s capabilities.
- Guaranteeing that all people with
disabilities have the opportunity to achieve their maximum
potential for independence, productivity, and integration
into the community.
- Assisting individuals through
planning, coordinating, locating, accessing, and monitoring
services and supports that will result in an optimal quality
of life.
- Ensuring that individuals with
developmental disabilities have access to opportunities and
the supports needed to be included in community life.
- Advocating that people with developmental disabilities
have the right to job training, employment at competitive
wages, and career growth. Insisting that individuals with
developmental disabilities be treated with dignity and
respect
Our staff is committed to maximizing the quality of life of our
